Commonly Asked Questions & Tips
What wattage bulbs do I need?
Thats a trick question! Not all bulbs are created equal, and their temperatures can vary depending on the brand, type, and wattage.
When selecting the right bulb for your reptile, several factors should be taken into account, including the ambient temperature of your home, size of your enclosure, the distance between the bulb and the basking platform, and the specific needs of your reptile.
Most setups (4x2x2' and larger) require:
(1) 50-80 watt Deep Heat Projector
(1) 50-100 watt Flood Style Basking Bulb
Using two lower-wattage bulbs instead of one high-wattage bulb is more effective for creating a warmer ambient temperature & provides a larger basking zone. This approach also reduces the risk of overheating your basking platform.
Using a high-quality reptile thermostat controller can provide peace of mind while eliminating the guesswork. Allowing you to configure your heating, cooling, lighting and or humidity. Most importantly good quality units have a built-in a safety relay that can disconnect power to the outlets in case of a solid-state control failure. We carry Spyder Robotics. These controllers are available with 1, 2, 4, or 6 outlets. Available on our lighting & heating page. Other brands are available online in all price ranges, but sure to pick one with some sort of safety relay. Otherwise, if a fuse in your unit blows it could cause your unit to run full power until someone notices. Often that's too late for your pet.
Reptiles require a thermal gradient to regulate their body temperature.
Here’s a simplified guide to creating one:
- Thermal Gradient: Maintain a higher temperature on one end of the enclosure and a cooler temperature on the other.
- Light and Heat Combination: In nature, the sun provides heat, visible light, and UV as a single source. Similarly, in captivity, heat and light sources should be grouped and directed at the basking zone. This allows reptiles to naturally regulate their exposure.
- Microclimate: Create separate areas within the enclosure—a warmer basking zone and a cooler, more humid zone. This setup supports reptiles in choosing their preferred environment, just like they would in the wild.

Heating & Lighting Placement Suggestions:
Mount two heat light fixtures equipped with safety baskets side by side, spaced approximately 6–8 inches apart at the center.
Your UV-B and LED fixtures can be positioned either in front of or behind the heat fixtures, ensuring they are placed over top of your basking platform.
Warning-
** Do not mount heat light fixtures closer than 6" away from a side panel or directly above your climbing shelf.
