What is the front frame made of? Our signature front frame design isn’t just for show; it’s the backbone of our enclosures. Toad Ranch frames are made from USA-made 3/4" thick high-density rigid plastic (HDPE)—the same material used in marina architecture, luxury boats, outdoor resort cabinetry, and theme park playground equipment. This material withstands the harshest conditions without breaking a sweat. It is UV stabilized and colored all the way through, ensuring it won’t fade, chip, rot, swell, delaminate, or scratch off!
Each enclosure is thoughtfully designed with perfectly sized boards for maximum strength and stability, beautifully configured to best suit the needs of your reptile.
Available in Driftwood, Mahogany, Teak, Whitewash, Black Dragon, Matte Black, and Matte White. Order Color Samples HERE.

What is the lower frame? The lower frame is the front lower board of the front your enclosure—this also functions as your substrate lip.
This custom option lets you increase the lower frame height, giving you the extra space needed for deep‑substrate bioactive builds or generous nesting and digging areas. You can upgrade a standard (2' tall enclosures) 3.5‑inch lower frame to 6 inches, or on taller enclosures, even choose heights up to 24 inches depending on the model.
Included specifications for each enclosure are listed on the individual product page.
Not only does this option look fantastic, it’s also ideal for species that love to burrow, dig, or thrive in naturalistic substrate‑heavy setups.

What are the dimensions? All our enclosures, stands, and hoods are represented as Length x Width x Height (LxWxH), including custom designs. These are true-to-size exterior dimensions.
Our 48x24x24" enclosure is exactly that—not 47" or some other odd measurement to the outside.
Interior dimensions can change based on selections. To find your interior dimensions, subtract 1" from the length (1-1/2" for Executive Upgrade), 1 1/4" from the width, and 1" from the height.

What are the body panels made of? At Toad Ranch we use only premium materials to ensure the safety of your animals! All our plastics are made in the USA - Free of any Lead & Heavy Metals so it's safer for you too!
Not all 1/2" PVC is created equal. At Toad Ranch, we exclusively use premium, top-grade material engineered with an optimal density. This delivers the perfect balance of lightweight design, exceptional rigidity, and outstanding performance—including superior screw-holding strength for secure assembly and long-term durability.
All standard reptile cages, stands & hood are made with 1/2" thick PVC body panels. This is your left, right, top, bottom and back panels. Available in white or black, these are the same color and smooth texture on both sides. (inside and outside of your enclosure)

More Custom Options are available: If you'd like your side panel to match your beautiful front frame, please select the Executive Upgrade. We also have a large selection of museum quality laminated prints that we can add onto the interior back & side panels.
Heating, Lighting & Ventilation
How do I add heating & lighting to a solid topped enclosure? Many reptile keepers prefer solid-topped enclosures because they provide superior temperature and humidity stability compared to traditional screen-top setups.
Heating & Lighting can be achieved with interior mounted fixtures. Arcadia Lamp Holder Pro- or similar type fixture can be used with our enclosures. These are super easy to mount directly onto the ceiling panel with provided 1/2" screws. NO NEED TO PRE-DRILL. This can be done easily by hand with just a screwdriver!
Mounting Tip Place the top panel of your enclosure on a smooth, flat surface. Position your light fixture where you’d like it to go, then mark the mounting points with a pencil. Use the included 1/2" screws to secure the fixture or mounting bracket.
The front edge of the top panel has the dowel holes. When the panel is lying in front of you with the dowel holes closest to you, remember that the right side (as it’s facing you now) will become the left side of the enclosure once the top panel is installed.
Enclosures with Ceiling Beams Light Bar Mounting Blocks are available on our Lighting page. These PVC mounting blocks are designed to securely hold LED and UVB fixtures off the ceiling panel, giving you the clearance needed when your enclosure includes aluminum ceiling support beam(s).
Heating & Lighting Safety Guidelines Proper care should always be taken when using any heating device with a reptile enclosure — PVC included.
Heat Lamp Placement
- Do not mount heat lamp fixtures above Cliff Hanger™ Climbing Shelves.
- Keep all heat fixtures at least 6 inches away from any side or back panel.
Solid‑Top Enclosures If you’re housing a snake or any reptile capable of reaching the fixture, we strongly recommend using a wire Heat Lamp Safety Basket over any heat bulb. This helps prevent accidental burns and keeps your animal safely away from the heat source.
Screen‑Top Enclosures (Using Clamp Lights) Clamp lights can be bumped or knocked over. For safety:
- Drill a small hole in the rim of the fixture.
- Use a wire tie to secure the fixture to the screen top. This prevents accidental tipping and keeps the light safely in place.
Reptile Thermostat Control We always recommend using a thermostat controller with any heating device or bulb. There are many brands available, but our preferred choice is Spyder Robotics for reliability and built‑in safety features.
What safety features does the Spyder Robotics Herpstat thermostat have that many other brands do not? Spyder Robotics Herpstat thermostats include several advanced safety features designed to prevent dangerous "runaway" heating:
- Built-in Mechanical Safety Relay — Provides backup protection by cutting power to all outputs if the main control fails or user-set error conditions are met.
- Internal Error Detection — Automatically shuts off heat if the temperature sensor fails or becomes disconnected.
- Audible High/Low Temperature Alarms — With the option to trigger the safety relay for full power cutoff.
- User-Replaceable Fuses (per-output on multi-zone models)
- Internal Overheat Protection — Monitors the thermostat itself and shuts down outputs if needed.
These features work together to make Herpstat units significantly safer than many basic reptile thermostats that can "fail on" in fault conditions.
Ceramic Heat Emitters We do not recommend using ceramic heat emitters (CHEs) inside PVC enclosures. Their surface temperatures get extremely hot, which can damage the enclosure and pose a safety risk.
A great alternative is the Arcadia Deep Heat Projector, which provides effective infrared heat without the dangerous surface temperatures of a CHE.
Should I Choose a Screen Top or a Solid Top Enclosure? It depends on your reptile’s needs, your heating/lighting setup, and the environmental conditions you want to maintain. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:
Solid Top (included standard on all enclosures) Provides better heat and humidity retention, making it easier to create a stable microclimate — especially important for tropical and humidity-loving species. It is the best choice for most reptiles when using internal heat sources like Deep Heat Projectors (DHP), Basking Bulbs and Radiant Heat Panels.
Perforated Aluminum Screen Top (optional upgrade) Designed for use with exterior fixtures. Appropriately sized clamp lights, UVB, and LED fixtures can sit directly on top of the screen.
Our aluminum screen tops offer 79% open space for excellent airflow and light penetration, while still being strong and rust-proof. There is also ample space inside the enclosure to mount your UVB fixture internally if you want maximum UVB benefits for your animal.
Important Notes When Choosing a Screen Top:
- Selecting a screen top will remove the included vents unless you choose otherwise.
- Several sizes are available on each product page.
Safety & Humidity Tips: Special care should always be taken when using any heating device with a reptile enclosure — a screen top is no exception.
If you prefer a perforated screen top but are worried about maintaining high humidity, adding a matching Canopy Hood is an excellent solution. It helps retain humidity while neatly hiding lamps and cords.
Things to Consider:
- Enclosure size
- Where your reptile spends most of its time
- Your room’s ambient temperature
- The specific temperature and humidity requirements of the species you are housing
Your goal is to create a stable environment that meets your pet’s natural needs. If you're unsure which top is best for your setup, feel free to contact us — we're happy to help!
What are fans for? Do I need one? Our small enclosure fans are a great optional upgrade that can significantly improve air quality and environmental control in your reptile habitat.
Benefits of adding a fan:
- Stimulates natural airflow, mimicking changing weather in the wild — this promotes activity and provides enrichment for your reptile.
- Provides a strong 51 CFM airflow for quick, complete air exchange.
- Easily mounts over any Tortoise Shell Style Vent with no custom cutouts required.
- Helps prevent stagnant air, reduces excess humidity, and lowers the risk of mold — especially useful in high-humidity and bioactive setups.
- Can help manage ambient temperatures when your room is too warm to maintain proper basking spots.
Do you need one? Not every setup requires a fan, but they are highly recommended for:
- Bioactive enclosures
- High-humidity species
- Situations where you struggle with excess moisture or poor airflow
For the best results, pair the fan with a thermostat control or timer. Fans and compatible thermostat controls/timers are available on our Enclosure Accessories page.
Doors, Locks & Safety
What are the doors made of? All Toad Ranch enclosures come standard with high-quality sliding glass doors made from 1/4" thick Certified Tempered Safety Glass with all polished edges for smooth, safe operation and a premium feel.
Tempered glass is 4 times stronger than regular glass and offers several key advantages over plastic alternatives:
- Will not yellow, warp, get cloudy, or bow over time
- Highly resistant to scratching
- Provides crystal-clear viewing of your reptile
- Requires no special cleaning products — just a quick wipe with regular glass cleaner
We believe the “window” into your enclosure is just as important as protecting what’s inside, which is why we use only premium tempered safety glass for optimal viewing and long-term durability.
Note for institutions: Fixed tempered glass front enclosures with swing HDPE access door are also available for zoos, nature centers, and other professional facilities.
Reptile Enclosure Door Locks are available as an accessory on our Enclosure Accessories page.
Are the glass doors removable? Yes, the tempered glass safety doors on Toad Ranch enclosures are designed to be easily removable for cleaning.
Simply use a slight lift and tilt motion to remove the doors. This makes routine cleaning quick and convenient while keeping your enclosure looking its best.
Do I need a lock? It depends on the species you are keeping.
Many smaller lizards and some snakes are not strong enough to open our sliding glass doors, so a lock may not be necessary for escape prevention. However, we still recommend adding a lock in most situations.
We use locks on all of our own enclosures for two important reasons:
- It serves as a helpful reminder to ensure the doors are fully closed after maintenance or feeding.
- It keeps curious kids (and other pets) safely out of the enclosure.
Locks are available as an optional accessory on our Enclosure Accessories page.
Accessories & Options
What is an accessory grommet? Do I need one? An accessory grommet is a 3" plastic insert that installs on the upper back panel of your Toad Ranch enclosure. It allows you to easily run cords into the enclosure even after the top panel is already in place.
How it works:
- It has a removable center section so you can route cords from inside to outside the enclosure.
- Once the cords are in place, the cap closes tightly around them for a neat, secure fit.
- Each grommet can accommodate up to 4 cords.
- Grommets are installed in the upper back corner when purchased.
Helpful Tip: During shipping, the cap is often taped to the outside of the back panel to prevent damage. The cap belongs on the inside of the enclosure.
Do I need one? Not necessarily. Every Toad Ranch enclosure already includes several built-in cord slots on the upper back panel. However, a grommet is highly recommended if:
- You plan to add extra cords later
- You want the flexibility to run additional wiring without removing the top
- You intend to stack enclosures
Can I use Casters? We do not recommend mounting casters directly onto the bottom of our enclosures. For best long-term stability and to fully support the bottom panel, we strongly suggest using one of our purpose-built Caster Stands instead.
Our Caster Stand features:
- 5" tall
- Constructed from a heavy-duty 3/4" thick HDPE
- Provides maximum strength and prevents sagging
- Designed specifically for secure caster mounting
Will my enclosure leak? Toad Ranch Reptile Enclosures feature very tight-fitting joints and, under normal husbandry conditions, they typically do not leak. However, a spilled water bowl or standing water can potentially cause leakage at the seams.
To prevent any issues, we strongly recommend sealing the lower seams as a simple precautionary measure.
Recommended Sealants:
- Lexel and DAP 230 are popular and trusted choices in the reptile community.
- We have used Lexel for many years with a wide variety of species — including sensitive ones — with excellent results.
Standard silicone does not adhere well to PVC or HDPE and is not recommended.
Setup & Maintenance
How do I setup my lights? Reptiles need a proper thermal gradient to regulate their body temperature effectively. This means creating a warmer basking area on one side of the enclosure and a cooler area on the other.
In nature, the sun provides heat, visible light, and UV together. In your enclosure, it’s best to group your heat and light sources over the basking zone so your reptile can naturally move in and out of the warmer area as needed.
Heating & Lighting Placement Guide:
- Mount two heat light fixtures (with safety baskets) side-by-side near the center of the basking area, spaced approximately 6–8 inches apart.
- Position your UV-B fixture and LED fixture either in front of or behind the heat fixtures.
- Make sure all lighting and heating is directed over your basking platform.
For species-specific recommendations, please see the Lighting Guide.
How do I create a temperature gradient? Creating a proper thermal gradient is one of the most important aspects of reptile husbandry.
Key Principles for Success:
- Always use a thermostat — This is non-negotiable for safety. We recommend Spyder Robotics (Herpstat).
- Group your heat and light sources over the basking area.
- Use lower wattage bulbs than you may have used in glass tanks (PVC holds heat better).
- Invest in a good basking platform (natural stone or our Bask-N-Hides work great).
What wattage bulbs do I need? That’s actually a trick question! The right wattage depends on:
- Ambient room temperature
- Size of your enclosure
- Distance from the bulb to your basking platform
- Specific temperature requirements of your reptile species
Helpful Tip: Use two lower-wattage bulbs instead of one high-wattage bulb for more even heat.
Does my reptile need a UV-B bulb? Yes — for the vast majority of reptile species, UV-B lighting is essential for long-term health and well-being.
UV-B helps your reptile produce Vitamin D3, which is critical for proper calcium absorption, bone health, immune function, and preventing metabolic bone disease (MBD).
How do I clean the glass doors? For regular cleaning: Use any standard reptile safe glass cleaner or a simple mixture of water and a few drops of dish soap.
For stubborn water spots: Mix vinegar and water and wipe the glass. For tougher spots, gently use super-fine #0000 grade steel wool in a circular motion.
What do I use to clean my enclosure? Glass Doors: Use standard glass cleaner or vinegar and water. PVC Interior & Exterior: Clean with a solution of vinegar and water or any non-abrasive, reptile-safe cleaner.
Always spot test first. Keep your enclosure indoors or in a shaded area — PVC can warp in direct outdoor sunlight.
Is assembly difficult? No — assembly is very simple! All you need is a screwdriver.
The front frame comes pre-assembled with the glass door track already installed. There are only 5 body panels to fasten together plus the frame. All enclosures use just one size screw.
Assembly Instructions can be found HERE. For visual help, check out our inspirational assembly & setup videos HERE.
